Elephant Arch Records have announced that Before Breakfast have won a competition aimed at giving under-represented artists a platform. The emerging Sheffield band have beat out over 35 submissions to secure a vinyl release deal with the indie label. Elephant Arch records will also put into motion a substantial PR campaign and handle distribution. The competition was judged by a panel that consisted of a host of celebrity judges, such as Majid Majid, the ex-Lord mayor of Sheffield and Christian Carlisle of BBC Introducing fame, to name a few.
The intention behind the project, launched earlier in the year, was to try and find lesser-known bands coming from under-represented backgrounds and give them a chance to shine. The label’s website detailed how they were searching for artists that identified as LGBTQIA, female or marginalised genders, people from minority ethnic backgrounds or with disabilities. The aim was allow musicians from these kinds of spaces to flourish in a supportive, professional environment and properly showcase their talent to a wider audience, despite the difficulties they may have faced previously.
